The Steady Story

This is for the adults who sit beside children. Teachers, support staff, therapists, parents, carers, anyone doing the quiet, daily work of showing up.

It's for the moment a child holds it together all day and falls apart the second they get home. The moment a simple request tips everything over. The moment they want to join in, but their body won't quite let them. The moment you find yourself wondering why something so small has suddenly become so hard.

It's for anyone who has tried the reward chart, the countdown, the carefully worded sentence, and still thought, what am I missing? And for anyone who has quietly wondered, what about my nervous system in all of this? Because you bring one into these moments too.

It isn't another expectation to carry, or a list of ways to do better. It's here to make the invisible work visible, to offer language for what you may already know in your gut, and to help you understand what's happening underneath a hard moment, including what's happening inside you.

You may be the first adult who sees a child as they are, not as who they're trying to be. That changes life trajectories.

What it covers

Underneath play, learning, communication and behaviour sit three threads of regulation, always woven together.

  • Sensory — how a child's brain and body take in the world: sound, light, touch, movement, the hum of a classroom, the tag on a shirt. Energy and arousal states, and what regulation tools really do (and don't do)

  • Emotional and relational — how regulation moves through relationship, how your own calm settles a child's nervous system, and how co-regulation slowly builds their capacity to steady themselves

  • Cognitive — the invisible work of thinking: holding information in mind, beginning, stopping, shifting, planning. Learning to notice the load a child is carrying before we read it as behaviour

And because understanding only goes so far, every thread comes with real strategies and how to use them, in the order that works: relationship and sensory support first, thinking tools once the brain and body have a little more room.
